With the plague of the “Modern Romance Movie” constantly spreading, it is cathartic to look back on a film that was able to tell a love story without falling victim to tired tropes. Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film, Lost in Translation, avoids all the cliches of the genre, and as a result it’s infinitely more engaging. Its cinematography, a crucial element most rom-coms don’t pay much attention to, plays a large role in the film’s success.
